Option 1: Islamic Art
Islamic art is made up of intricate and complex arrangements (or patterns) of geometric shapes. The simple forms of the circle, square, and straight line are the basis of the pattern. When combined, duplicated, interlaced, and arranged, these geometric shapes form an intricate pattern. For this assignment, on a piece of 8x10 canvas, students will create a work of art using a geometric pattern.

Option 2: Make a Kite

As the title implies, one of the main recurrent motifs of the novel Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, is a kite. As a way of connecting to the text, take the time to construct and decorate a kite of your own. To help you get started you should familiarize yourself with the basic parts of a kite, and then follow the attached instructions.

A kite consists of these basic parts:
1. The spine: The vertical stick that you build the kite around.
2. The spar: The support sticks that are placed crossways or at a slant over the spine.
3. The frame: The joined spine and spars, usually with a string
connecting their ends, that create the shape of the kite and
make a support for the cover.
4. The cover: Paper, plastic, cloth that covers the frame to
make a kite.
5. The Bridle: One or more strings attached to the spine or
spars, which help control the kite.
6. The flying line: The string running from the kite’s bridle,
where you hold to fly the kite (usually light weight, thin and
strong string).
7. The tail: A long strip of paper or plastic or ribbon that helps
to balance the kite in flight.
8. The reel: The object you use to wind your flying line, to keep
it from getting tangled or flying away.

Option 3: Analyzing Islamic Poetry

Jalalud’ din Rumi is one of the world’s most famous mystical poets. He has produced many poems that focus on one’s search for the union with the divine. Rumi’s poetry is widely appreciated because of his ability to use language to inspire and uplift our own inner consciousness. For this assignment, you will need to select and analyze a poem written by Rumi, and then answer the following questions in a one page paper.

1. Include the title of poem and the name of the author.
2. What is the poem about?
3. What is the theme? What is the tone? Cite specific evidence.
4. Choose three poetic devices that the poet uses to express the theme of the poem. Cite specific evidence.
5. What is the most important line of the poem? Why?
6. What did you learn from this poem? Did you like the poem? Why?
Why not?

• Please note, you will need to submit the following if you choose option three: 1) Copy of poem, 2) Copy of poem with annotated notes, and 3) One page analysis of poem.
